On the last night he ever intended to spend in Boulder, Scott Marshall couldn’t sleep. Tomorrow was too big a day.

He had gone on road trips before, of course. Ever since he could remember, jumping into a car and driving hundreds of miles to one destination or another had been a regular impulse with him: Vegas, New Orleans, Atlanta. Once, while he was still in college, he and the wife—ex-wife now—had put 1,400 miles on an old ’81 Chevy Impala fireballing round-trip from East Lansing to Fort Lauderdale, just to spend one weekend in the sun before another merciless Michigan winter could completely kick in.

For all his indiscriminate wanderlust, however, Scott had never been to Los Angeles. It always seemed too much the thing to do. He had nothing against the descriptions he’d heard of the place—twelve straight months of sunshine, drop-dead beautiful women walking supermarket aisles in thong bikinis—but running off to L.A. was like a given, something all young people born elsewhere were expected to try at one time or another, so he had avoided making such a trip if only to maintain the image he had of himself as a freethinking, unpredictable nonconformist.

Now, however, finally having good reason to go to L.A., he was embarking upon the journey. Not in the impressive style he would have preferred, perhaps—via first-class air, followed by a limo ride to the five-star, Beverly Hills-adjacent hotel of his choice—but that was cool. Striking poses of prosperity was not the point of the exercise. Starting a bold new chapter in his life was. He could come back later looking like a king, the new career he was starting in less than a week having borne him the fruit of his dreams; roll down Sunset in a Porsche or a Benz, instead of the six-year-old, piece-of-shit Chevy Cavalier he would be driving into town this time.

His bags were all packed, and the car was loaded, and everything he would be taking with him to Tennessee later was boxed up and ready for shipping. If he were traveling alone, he’d go nonstop, keep his foot on the Chevy’s gas to the tune of eighty-plus the whole way, probably cruise into L.A. inside fourteen hours, highway conditions permitting. But Scott had a passenger on this trip, and so he was anticipating having to stop at least once, maybe twice after leaving Colorado. Rather than reach Los Angeles as early as Thursday morning, he figured he’d do so sometime late that afternoon. The delay wasn’t ideal, as he was working on a tight schedule, but he considered it a fair tradeoff for Taylor’s company, which would no doubt make the hours on the road pass a little faster than they might have otherwise. Taylor was Scott’s best friend in the world.

And, if it was humanly possible, he was looking forward to seeing Ronnie Deal again even more than Scott was himself.
